The 4D ART Cavern

2024

The 4D ART Cavern is the first collaborative partnership between the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) and 4D ART to co-create a multi-platform digital art distribution and mediation platform through the integration of the 4D ART Cavern virtual gallery into Satellite. Michel Lemieux is in control of the artistic direction of the project, which will initially contain some of his virtual works, and the technological aspect is handled by the SAT team.

At the heart of this upgrade to the virtual gallery, the mediation process has been redesigned to place users at the heart of artistic decisions, ensuring a fun and rewarding experience. This important aspect of the co-creation project between 4D ART and SAT was accomplished with the help of ARTENSO, who supported the team as well as organizing and leading a day of co-creation activities. The CSSDM, another major partner in the project, enabled the team to carry out real-life testing, inviting high school students to try out the platform and provide their comments and suggestions.

“Naturally, the 4D Art Cavern will interest young people, as digital technology is a medium that appeals to them a lot: the dematerialization of environments and the possibility to visit art galleries from anywhere interests them. The school mediation project linked to the cavern is really a natural fit. We were delighted with the feedback we received from high-school students following the tests: the observations they made weren't really technological in nature, but much more focused on the works presented in the cavern, on the themes addressed in 4D ART's VR films. It gives us hope that there's still a desire among youth to delve deeper artistically and intellectually, to reflect on the human condition, on philosophy and the relationship we have with technology.”
Michel Lemieux, artist and artistic director of the project

The project will soon be deployed as a ready-to-use cultural activity for teachers wishing to bring it to their classrooms. For more information, contact services@sat.qc.ca

This project is made possible thanks to funding from the Ville de Montréal under the Programme initiatives collaboratives en créativité numérique (part of the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal between the Ville de Montréal and the Gouvernement du Québec).
